ⅠIntroduction of the Institute

As the main body of teaching and research of hydraulic structural engineering disciplines, the Institute of Hydraulic Structure relies on and owns State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center of Water Resources Efficient Utilization and Engineering Safety, the Safety Engineering Research Center of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Hydraulic Structure and Structural Mechanics of Ministry of Water Resources, Nanjing Geosynthetics Engineering Technology Research Center, and so on. The Seismic and Disaster Prevention Committee of China Society for Hydropower Engineering is affiliated to the Institute.

The subject of hydraulic structure engineering is the earliest and most developed subject of its kind in our country. In 1981, the subject was granted the rights to confer master 's degree and doctorate' s degree simultaneously. In 1990, the mobile post-doctoral station was built. In 1996, it became a key discipline of the Ministry of Water Resources. Next year, it became key discipline of “211 Project”(The 211 Project is strategic cross-century project formulated by the Chinese government for the implementation of the strategy of invigorating the country through science, technology and education) under the Ministry of Education. In 1999, it established the distinguished professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program. In 2001, it established the Center of Safety Research of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering under the Ministry of Education and was rated as the national key discipline. The subject undertook lots of projects of National Natural Science Funds, National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program) and National Key Technologies Research and Development Program of China. It also undertook the scientific research projects related to the Three Gorges, Longtan, Xiangjiaba, Er’tan, Xiaowan, Xiluodu, Laxiwa, Jinpin, Xiaolangdi, Shuangjiangkou, Lianghekou, Shuibuya, Bakun and South-to-North Water Diversion Projects. It has won over 80 prizes including the Special, Seond and third prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, and Innovative Technique Award of Japan Society of Civil Engineers. The subject has lots of national invention patents and published more than 40 textbooks and monographs, as well as 1600 academic papers. Several awards such as the National Special Top Textbook for Excellent Teaching Materials have been awarded.

Academician WU Zhongru is the chief scientist of the institute, ZHOU Junliang and CHEN Houqun are the scientific and technological advisors. There are 40 faculty members, 18 professors and 12 doctoral supervisors in the institute. Most of the faculty members have doctoral degree and overseas study or further study experience. There are more than 400 full-time doctoral and postgraduate students.

4)Large sluice, ship locks and water transmission structures;
